Skin lesion excision is the surgical removal of a growth or lump on or beneath the skin. Lesions may be removed because they are suspicious and require histological analysis, because they are causing discomfort or functional problems, or because the patient wishes to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.
At Skincodes, all lesion excisions are performed by Dr Ang Sue-May under local anaesthetic. Assessment and clinical reasoning precede every procedure.
Skincodes performs excisions for a range of benign and potentially suspicious skin lesions, including:
Cysts are enclosed sacs beneath the skin, often filled with keratin or sebaceous material. They may become inflamed, infected, or simply continue to enlarge. Surgical excision removes the cyst along with its wall, which reduces the chance of recurrence.
Lipomas are benign fatty lumps that develop beneath the skin. They are generally soft, mobile, and non-tender, but may be removed when they are large, growing, or causing discomfort or cosmetic concern.
These firm, fibrous nodules are benign and common on the lower limbs. They are typically removed when symptomatic or when the diagnosis is uncertain.
Skin tags are soft, pedunculated growths that frequently occur in areas of friction. Removal is straightforward and is performed for comfort or cosmetic preference.
Any lesion that is new, changing, irregular, or difficult to diagnose clinically warrants excision and histological assessment. Dr Ang applies careful clinical and dermoscopic evaluation to all such lesions before recommending the appropriate management.
Lesion excisions are performed in-clinic under local anaesthetic. The skin around the lesion is numbed, after which the lesion is surgically removed. The wound is closed with sutures where appropriate, and the excised tissue is sent for pathological examination if clinically indicated.
Most procedures are completed within a single visit. You will receive wound care instructions and a follow-up appointment to review healing and, where relevant, histology results.
