Skin Tag Removal Singapore
Skin tags – known medically as acrochordons or soft fibromas – are small, benign growths that hang from the skin on a narrow stalk. They are among the most common skin lesions in adults and are entirely non-cancerous. Though they cause no medical harm, skin tags can become irritated by clothing or jewellery, and many patients seek removal for cosmetic reasons or ongoing comfort.
Before any treatment, Dr Ang Sue-May assesses each lesion to confirm its benign nature and ensure the most appropriate method of removal is selected. Raised skin lesions can have various causes, and accurate diagnosis avoids the risk of treating a lesion that warrants further investigation.
Signs & Symptoms
Small, soft, flesh-coloured growths attached to the skin by a thin stalk (peduncle)
Range in size from a few millimetres to over a centimetre
Most commonly found on the neck, armpits, groin, under the breasts, and around the eyelids
Generally painless unless subject to repeated friction or catching on clothing or accessories
May become darkened or irritated if the stalk becomes twisted
Causes & Triggers
The precise cause of skin tag formation is not fully established, but several factors are associated with their development:
Friction between skin surfaces or against clothing – which is why they are common in skin fold areas
Increasing age – skin tags become more prevalent from middle age onward
Metabolic factors including insulin resistance and obesity
Pregnancy – hormonal changes can promote skin tag formation
Genetic predisposition – some individuals are more prone to developing one or multiple skin tags, occasionally associated with underlying metabolic factors.
Treatment at Skincodes
Specialist assessment is an important first step, as raised skin lesions can have various causes. Accurate diagnosis avoids the risk of treating a lesion that warrants further investigation.
Once the benign nature of the lesion is confirmed, treatment options include:
Surgical Snip Excision
The stalk of the skin tag is carefully cut at its base under local anaesthesia. This is precise, effective, and produces immediate results.
Cryotherapy
The application of liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the skin tag over one or two sessions.
Cauterisation (Electrocautery)
Targeted heat is applied to remove the lesion and seal the surrounding tissue simultaneously.
The method selected will depend on the size, location, and number of lesions. Aftercare advice and wound care guidance are provided following treatment.
Why Choose Specialist Surgical Care
Dermatological surgery performed by a specialist offers distinct advantages:
- Accurate pre-surgical diagnosis with dermoscopy. Lesions are assessed carefully as appearances can be
misleading without specialist evaluation - Appropriate margin assessment for cancer excisions based on lesion type and guidelines
- Histological analysis of all removed tissue to confirm diagnosis and clear margins
- Minimally invasive techniques selected to optimise cosmetic outcomes
- Structured follow-up and surveillance for ongoing skin health
