Athlete's Foot Treatment Singapore

Athlete’s foot – known medically as tinea pedis – is a fungal infection of the skin of the feet, most commonly caused by dermatophyte fungi. It is one of the most prevalent fungal skin infections and is particularly common in Singapore, where the warm, humid climate creates conditions in which fungi thrive.

Although athlete’s foot is often thought of as a minor ailment, untreated or recurrent infection can spread to the toenails, the hands, or other areas of the body, and may become a source of secondary bacterial infection.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Itching, stinging, and burning between the toes – particularly the fourth and fifth web spaces
  • Scaling, peeling, or macerated (soft, white, soggy) skin between the toes
  • Dry, flaky scaling on the soles and sides of the feet – the “moccasin” pattern
  • In some cases, vesicular (blister-forming) tinea pedis, with small, itchy blisters on the arch or sides of the foot
  • Secondary bacterial infection of macerated skin, causing increased pain, malodour, or discharge
  • Thickened, discoloured nails if the infection has spread to the toenails (onychomycosis)

Causes & Triggers

Tinea pedis is caused by dermatophyte fungi, most commonly Trichophyton rubrum. Transmission occurs through contact with contaminated surfaces – shower floors, changing rooms, swimming pool areas, and shared footwear. Conditions that favour fungal growth include:

  • Warmth and moisture – particularly in closed, non-breathable footwear
  • Singapore’s climate, which promotes sweating and skin maceration
  • Shared communal facilities
  • Immunosuppression or diabetes, which increase susceptibility to fungal infections
  • Prolonged antibiotic use

Treatment at Skincodes

Topical antifungal agents – creams, sprays, or powders containing terbinafine, clotrimazole, or other antifungal compounds – are effective for most uncomplicated cases of tinea pedis. Treatment is continued for the recommended duration even after symptoms improve to prevent recurrence.

Oral antifungal therapy is indicated for more extensive infections, involvement of the toenails (onychomycosis), recurrent infection despite topical treatment, or in patients where topical therapy is impractical.

Footwear and hygiene guidance is an important adjunct – drying thoroughly between the toes, choosing breathable footwear, and using antifungal powder in shoes and socks reduces the risk of recurrence.

Why Choose Specialist Surgical Care

Dermatological surgery performed by a specialist offers distinct advantages:

  • Accurate pre-surgical diagnosis with dermoscopy. Lesions are assessed carefully as appearances can be
    misleading without specialist evaluation
  • Appropriate margin assessment for cancer excisions based on lesion type and guidelines
  • Histological analysis of all removed tissue to confirm diagnosis and clear margins
  • Minimally invasive techniques selected to optimise cosmetic outcomes
  • Structured follow-up and surveillance for ongoing skin health
